Osaka Garden in Bloom April 22, 2026

Walking from the gate to the left, going clockwise

Chinese Crabapple (several throughout garden)

Yodogawa azalea (according to google–definitely an azalea)

Judii Vibernum just starting to bloom near the zigzag bridge. Also called Korean Spicebush.

Japanese Crabapple

Regular old lilac, which predates the 1993 garden, so it’s allowed to stay though it can’t be shaped and pruned.

New to me in the garden, the double flowering Kwanzan Cherry trees by the water and along the garden outside the gate. Unlike other cherry trees, the double blossoms appear with the reddish-bronze leaves. Peak bloom mid to late April–now!

An Illinois native– Redbud

Hellebores–brought from the Perennial Garden aka the Women’s Garden

Flowering dogwood—Cornus florida “Rubra” (according to the internet)

Just starting to open—honeysuckle (by the dogwood)—old photo to show what it turns into.

Crabapple – low and over the water

An old photo—but the red azaleas along the walk are starting to show buds so they may be stunning by next week. They are the “stewartsonia” azalea.
